Welcome to the RBY team builder. This is STRICTLY for beginners who know little to nothing about competitive RBY. If you know standard movesets, this place isn't for you. If you don't know what standard movesets mean, why then you've come to the right place. Of course, you can know what standard movesets mean and still be new to RBY, so listen up Ru/Sa/E players looking for something new!
Standard? What's that?
A standard is a staple Pokemon of RBY. These are Pokemon that you'll fight in just about every game of competitive RBY.
Yeah Charizard is definitely standard, I rock with it all the time!
MOST people are going to be above those in-game trainers who you crushed without blinking an eye. Yes, I am being serious by saying most as there are always idiots out there. Anyways, here's the list of standards.
Exeggutor
Zapdos
Gengar
Starmie
Alakazam
Chansey
Tauros
Snorlax
Slowbro
Golem
Rhydon
Jynx
Raichu
Articuno
Lapras
Dragonite
Wow Raichu rocks, it's standard!
Now hold on there, big stallion. You've got to know how to use these Pokemon before you go out there. You're still going to lose easily if you don't have proper movesets and know what you're doing with these bad boys.
Can you tell me what my gameplan should be then?
Yep. Basically you'll always want at least one sleeper on your team. I feel this is essential because in RBY, a sleeping Pokemon is usually as good as dead. Some people use two sleepers in case their main sleeper gets put to sleep or killed from Sleep Powder (or Hypnosis which I HATE using) missing too much. You'll want at least two Pokemon who can T-Wave as well.
Thunder Wave? That crappy move?
Yeah, that awesome move. Paralysis is very important in RBY. A paralyzed Pokemon will always go last. This can turn someones Tauros into a shell of it's former self. Even if a Pokemon uses Rest, it still suffers the speed loss from paralysis. Also, because RBY is such a luck based game......
Luck based? WHA??
Yeah, RBY is a luck based game. When parallyzed, the Pokemon has a 1/4 chance of not moving. You'll find this happening a lot. CH's seem to occur a lot too, along with sleep moves missing and RBY has this nice feature where no move has 100% accuracy, it's 99.6%
[99.6? Um so?
So it means you'll be missing 1/255 times. I've seen this happen to SamG in two turns in a row before. Just when you think you've won with one more Surf for the win, you miss and then take a paralyzing Body Slam and lose 1-0 to the incoming Hyper Beam.
What moves have 99.6% accuracy?
Surf
Thunderbolt
Thunderwave
Psychic
Body Slam
Earthquake
Selfdestruct
Explosion
Ice Beam
Flamethrower
Slash
Mega Drain
Double Edge
I didn't list all the moves, just the most commonly used ones in competitive play.
Well ok, lets go back to the gameplan now
Right. Now you'll want a sleeper, two T-Wavers and two physical sweepers. I highly recommend Tauros and Snorlax. These two are pretty much the two best physical sweepers in the game.
Ok I'm going out there to PWN thanks GGFan!
Whats your Tauros' moveset?
Fire Blast, Thunder, Blizzard, Strength, it's a phyiscal sweeper!
A physical sweeper, as in sweeping Pokemon with attack based moves. Three of your four moves are special based and Strength sucks.
Where are you getting this from?
The stats. Pay attention to the stats. A Pokemon with a bad special shouldn't be using special attacks unless there's no other means necessary.
Can you tell me attack based and special based moves?
Yep, the types determine what's attack based and what's special based. Here are the attack based type moves.
Normal
Ground
Rock
Bug
Fighting
Poison
These are all attack based moves. So when you use Earthquake, pay attention to that attack stat. Here are the special based moves:
Fire
Water
Electric
Ice
Psychic
Grass
So while Psychic may seem like a cool move, it's not going to do much if a Pokemon with low special is using it.
More coming soon.
