For some time I have wanted to write about what was easily my best and most enthralling match in years. Moreover, the fact that it took place in the semi-finals of a tournament made it that much more exciting.
Prior to my eventual victory I had not won a tournament in three years, the last being RBY2K10's first tournament. I was motivated to reach the top again, but in order to do so I had to beat the best that the German circuit had to offer. Here's a quick review of my previous opponents:

Pasy holds either the respectable or dubious title of the best player in Pokefans to have never won a tournament. Over the last few months I've gotten to know him pretty well; he's a pretty stand-up fellow, I must say. However, there are no friends in competitive Pokemon, unfortunately (at least during the matches).
My game against Pasy was pretty evenly matched. It was well-played on both sides, with me receiving most of the luck. I don't remember anything in particular about it, though.
~Glurak36/Charizard
I have quite the history with one of Pokefans' best Austrian players: we've met in the finals of a tournament in both Pokemonexperte and Pokefans, and have had several tournament matches against each other overall. This was our first match in four, maybe five years, so this was pretty cool for me.
Our match was very competitive. Glurak is a great player who can easily hold his own with the best, and our game was intense to the very end. Unfortunately, the server had some technical issues and everybody got DCd at the end of the game, in which it was too close to decide a winner. We had a rematch, which I won with a healthy dose of RBY hax.
~The_Sweeper
I didn't know him very well at all; he's one of Pokefans' newer players, I think. Despite his youth, however, he certainly knew what he was doing. I won in what was a rather unremarkable battle.
Luckily, I have gotten the chance to know The_Sweeper better after our encounter. He's a very down-to-earth, amenable player with whom I can chat about anything. There are too many irritable, pompous idiots on servers who ignore others and refuse to chat--but he's definitely not one of them.

Moschuss is another newer player, but we previously faced each other in the second round of an ADV Ubers tournament. I knew I'd have my work cut out for me here, but what's the point of Pokemon--and life in general--without its struggles and uncertainty?
~Game 1
This was a relatively haxy game that I would have won if I didn't overestimate Moschuss at times. He's definitely a very competent RBY player, but one could tell that he was still kind of green. In the end his Slowbro got the lucky FP hax against my Chansey for the 1-0 win.
~Game 2
My back against the wall, I knew I had to play better here. This was a very quick, decisive 5-0 win for me. Nothing really remarkable to say about the game.

He wasn't able to recover from this lousy start; however, I certainly wouldn't attribute this win to luck. Besides the freeze, I don't remember anything extraordinary happening.
In the semi-finals I'd play either Conflict or Glurak. Both matchups sounded really interesting to me, because I've never played the former and because of my history with the latter. Conflict beat Glurak, setting the stage for a GGFan/Conflict semi-finals.
Semi-finals - vs Conflict
~Game 1
This was a mirror match: both of our teams were exactly the same (Starmie/Exeggutor/Tauros/Snorlax/Chansey/Alakazam). It was a competitive match that Conflict won. Once again, my back was against the wall.
~Game 2
This was a great game in its own right. I saved the log, and will possibly write an in-depth of review it later on. For the time being, though, I'll just say that it came down to his Tauros and Zam against my Chansey and Zam. I predicted the Hyper Beam and switched into my full-health Alakazam, scoring the kill on Conflict's crippled Tauros and cornering him into an untenable situation. It certainly would have been possible for him to still make it competitive with enough hax, but thankfully my Chansey had Light Screen--which I believe was the reason he decided to forfeit instead of finishing the match. Light Screen is probably considered by some to be a gimmick, but I think it's one of Chansey's better options.
~Game 3
This was it--all the marbles were on the line. I could taste the final round, but it was still so far away. Barring hax this was going to be an intense matchup, and my god did it deliver. Here were are our teams:

One can immediately notice how much of an anomaly Conflict's team was; that is, the absence of both Tauros and Snorlax.

~Starmie is easily one of the best leads in the game, if not the best. It scares away Gengar, takes 40% off Exeggutor, and makes good sleep bait thanks to its solid defenses. My goal here was to chip away at Jynx, but I noticed an opening when he tried to put Starmie back to sleep and switched to Snorlax. I used Earthquake mostly to check for Counter, but also because of Gengar or GolDon. He switched to Cloyster, so not much was accomplished for me.

My whole plan revolved around chipping away at Jynx until I got it into Hyper Beam kill range. Hyper Beam isn't used very often (perhaps not by anybody besides me), so I figured that he wouldn't see it coming and would stay in, sensing my desperation. But Eggy wasn't in there to pray for special falls and FPs--it was a killing machine bent on destruction. I landed the clutch Hyper Beam, but I still had quite the mountain to climb.

It came down to whether or not Zapdos would crit. Luckily it didnt, and I completed an amazing comeback to win 2-0. I would go on to defeat Fire-Blaziken in the finals, in a matchup where I lost the first game for a third time in a row but still managed to win the set.
Now that I've had the chance to really read this log and write about it, my feelings are, I admit, kind of mixed. Maybe it's not the technical masterpiece that great players like myself and Conflict strive for; but, on the other hand, this is the kind of game that defines RBY. I made a couple of awesome predictions to stay alive, got lucky when I absolutely needed to be, and the game came down to a critical hit. When I consider what was on the line, both players' reputations, and the intensity of the game itself, this one easily ranks among my favorites.

Our match was very competitive. Glurak is a great player who can easily hold his own with the best, and our game was intense to the very end. Unfortunately, the server had some technical issues and everybody got DCd at the end of the game, in which it was too close to decide a winner. We had a rematch, which I won with a healthy dose of RBY hax.

I didn't know him very well at all; he's one of Pokefans' newer players, I think. Despite his youth, however, he certainly knew what he was doing. I won in what was a rather unremarkable battle.
Luckily, I have gotten the chance to know The_Sweeper better after our encounter. He's a very down-to-earth, amenable player with whom I can chat about anything. There are too many irritable, pompous idiots on servers who ignore others and refuse to chat--but he's definitely not one of them.

Moschuss is another newer player, but we previously faced each other in the second round of an ADV Ubers tournament. I knew I'd have my work cut out for me here, but what's the point of Pokemon--and life in general--without its struggles and uncertainty?

This was a relatively haxy game that I would have won if I didn't overestimate Moschuss at times. He's definitely a very competent RBY player, but one could tell that he was still kind of green. In the end his Slowbro got the lucky FP hax against my Chansey for the 1-0 win.
~Game 2
My back against the wall, I knew I had to play better here. This was a very quick, decisive 5-0 win for me. Nothing really remarkable to say about the game.

He wasn't able to recover from this lousy start; however, I certainly wouldn't attribute this win to luck. Besides the freeze, I don't remember anything extraordinary happening.
In the semi-finals I'd play either Conflict or Glurak. Both matchups sounded really interesting to me, because I've never played the former and because of my history with the latter. Conflict beat Glurak, setting the stage for a GGFan/Conflict semi-finals.

~Game 1
This was a mirror match: both of our teams were exactly the same (Starmie/Exeggutor/Tauros/Snorlax/Chansey/Alakazam). It was a competitive match that Conflict won. Once again, my back was against the wall.
~Game 2
This was a great game in its own right. I saved the log, and will possibly write an in-depth of review it later on. For the time being, though, I'll just say that it came down to his Tauros and Zam against my Chansey and Zam. I predicted the Hyper Beam and switched into my full-health Alakazam, scoring the kill on Conflict's crippled Tauros and cornering him into an untenable situation. It certainly would have been possible for him to still make it competitive with enough hax, but thankfully my Chansey had Light Screen--which I believe was the reason he decided to forfeit instead of finishing the match. Light Screen is probably considered by some to be a gimmick, but I think it's one of Chansey's better options.
~Game 3
This was it--all the marbles were on the line. I could taste the final round, but it was still so far away. Barring hax this was going to be an intense matchup, and my god did it deliver. Here were are our teams:

~Starmie is easily one of the best leads in the game, if not the best. It scares away Gengar, takes 40% off Exeggutor, and makes good sleep bait thanks to its solid defenses. My goal here was to chip away at Jynx, but I noticed an opening when he tried to put Starmie back to sleep and switched to Snorlax. I used Earthquake mostly to check for Counter, but also because of Gengar or GolDon. He switched to Cloyster, so not much was accomplished for me.

My whole plan revolved around chipping away at Jynx until I got it into Hyper Beam kill range. Hyper Beam isn't used very often (perhaps not by anybody besides me), so I figured that he wouldn't see it coming and would stay in, sensing my desperation. But Eggy wasn't in there to pray for special falls and FPs--it was a killing machine bent on destruction. I landed the clutch Hyper Beam, but I still had quite the mountain to climb.

It came down to whether or not Zapdos would crit. Luckily it didnt, and I completed an amazing comeback to win 2-0. I would go on to defeat Fire-Blaziken in the finals, in a matchup where I lost the first game for a third time in a row but still managed to win the set.
Now that I've had the chance to really read this log and write about it, my feelings are, I admit, kind of mixed. Maybe it's not the technical masterpiece that great players like myself and Conflict strive for; but, on the other hand, this is the kind of game that defines RBY. I made a couple of awesome predictions to stay alive, got lucky when I absolutely needed to be, and the game came down to a critical hit. When I consider what was on the line, both players' reputations, and the intensity of the game itself, this one easily ranks among my favorites.
