That's right, on January 10th, 2008, I have decided to temporarily end THE Alternative as a competitive forum. It will be an RBY database until or if I can manage to get THE Alternative running again.
The main (and pretty much only) reason that I am doing this is that we no longer have active members. THE Alternative, for a long time, was a combine that depended on many of it's long lasting pieces to keep it running. It seems these pieces have finally ran their course, and thus THE Alternative has ran it's course as well.
THE Alternative has had several occasions of down activity, most of them not being serious. We came close to death in the middle of 2007, but I was able to get THE Alternative back to a competitive community again. I guess that was just destiny deciding to give this place a break.
In many cases, I was able to find people who would join our tournaments and last for at least a little bit. Considering that this is currently the worst period that online Pokemon has suffered, I cannot accomplish this again. I depended on what we had to remain with us, but this did not happen, and there is nothing left that I can do. I have nowhere to look to, and this is the only reasonable outcome.
I never once gave a shit about social activity, or post counts or any of that crap. The only thing that mattered to me is that THE Alternative had consistent tournaments and pulled off things no forum ever did. I also like to think that THE Alternative helped spark interest back into RBY, because around the time that this forum was made, RBY was only seen as a novelty that Smogon liked to pull out occasionally.
I hope that to everyone who went here, that THE Alternative helped provide you with a sense of satisfaction, that in the midst of three other gens, that there are people who still love RBY. RBY is my favorite gen, some of my best battles ever were because of THE Alternative, and it was great getting to write analyses for every fully evolved Pokemon.
Most importantly however, thank you to every single person who supported and/or participated in THE Alternative. Whether you were HcM who was in practically every tournament THE Alternative had upon joining the forum, or someone like BEUD who was in a grand total of one tournament, you showed enough interest to dedicate time to this community, and I thank you.
Everything will remain untouched, I will just be preventing anyone from being able to post. However, I don't want THE Alternative as a competitive community in this state, because it's just a joke right now.
Things couldn't be any worse in online Pokemon right now. Pokemonexperte died, PokeRealm is no longer a competitive community, Morlord died, many other places have died too. Netbattle is getting smaller and smaller, and because of that, the independent communities are getting smaller and are too illegitimate to be taken seriously, mostly serving as nothing but mundane social servers. I am sorry but I just don't care enough to try and make a name for myself in a place like Team Blaze or Mew Shrine Stadium.
Of course, I am not saying that size is everything, because THE Alternative proved that to be wrong. What I am saying however is that too many people have lost faith in Netbattle and there are not enough left besides the foriegners. I have no intentions of battling in Brazil again and I can no longer be a full time battler in Europe, so I am pretty much screwed.
Again, it's been a wild ride and thanks to everyone who contributed to THE Alternative to becoming what it was; a competitive RBY community. No matter how much or how little you contributed, I cannot thank you guys enough.
