By far the most popular Pokemon in RBY, Tauros comes equipped with a great attack stat, two of the best attacks to get STAB with in the game and great speed as well. Additionally, Tauros is very good at taking attacks and isn't easily taken down like other sweepers are. An example of this is Tauros' ability to survive two Psychics (barring a special fall) from Alakazam despite having a below average special stat.
Tauros thrives on its critical hit rate, which is over 20%, giving it the rep of being the "luck god" of RBY. While other Pokemon are used as much as Tauros and have a higher critical hit rate, they don't have the sweeping potential that Tauros does (Alakazam), or will usually play a more supportive role (Starmie).
