So, during a boring night, I decided to test a little something out. I wrote up a little program to quickly test 100000 battles between two pokes and here’s some of the things I got. All results ignore the 255 rule, however any attack that is not 100% accurate has the 255 rule applied. The 255 rule is also applied to critical hits and special effects. The damages are also fixed numbers, just like the game.
Match 1) Dugtrio’s Fissure vs Starmie’s Surf
Dugtrio’s Fissure is usually overlooked since Dugtrio has terrible overall stats and can’t do it’s job at beating Electrics. But, if Dugtrio was able to beat Starmie, which is probably it’s worst nightmare, maybe Dugtrio could become a little more popular.
Dugtrio wins 34354
Starmie wins 65646
Analysis
Dugtrio wins about 34% of the time
Starmie wins about 66% of the time
Conclusion
Dugtrio wins more then it should as the extra 4% is from surviving Surf and then hitting Fissure the next turn. Still at only 34% of the time, Dugtrio isn’t reliable at beating everything, but anything that may have trouble beating Dugtrio (Like Magikarp) gives Dugtrio many chances to Fissure the opponent.
Match 2) Alakazam’s Psychic vs Rhydon’s Earthquake
One of the most interesting bouts between two pokes is Rhydon vs Alakazam. Basically the most powerful physical vs the most powerful special.
Crit is critical hits and Spec is when Alakazam’s Psychic lowers special on the first turn
I went in-depth with the results, as this is very helpful for standard matches.
Rhydon wins, both crits, no spec 652
Rhydon wins, Zam crits, no spec 0
Rhydon wins, Don crits, no spec 6122
Rhydon wins, no crits, no spec 13498
Rhydon wins, both crits, yes spec 284
Rhydon wins, Zam crits, yes spec 0
Rhydon wins, Don crits, yes spec 2042
Rhydon wins, no crits, yes spec 0
Alakazam wins, both crits, no spec 0
Alakazam wins, Zam crits, no spec 31222
Alakazam wins, Don crits, no spec 0
Alakazam wins, no crits, no spec 22469
Alakazam wins, both crits, yes spec 0
Alakazam wins, Zam crits, yes spec 7805
Alakazam wins, Don crits, yes spec 0
Alakazam wins, no crits, yes spec 15906
Analysis
If Rhydon gets a critical hit, Alakazam will lose
If Alakazam lowers special and Rhydon doesn’t get a critical hit, Alakazam wins
Rhydon has roughly a 23% chance of beating Alakazam
Alakazam has roughly a 77% chance of beating Rhydon
Conclusion
If you use Alakazam against Rhydon, you have a strong chance on winning, if you’re willing to lose lots of HP. If you use Rhydon, it’s best if you switch, but if you decide not to, there’s still a chance you can beat Alakazam.
Match 3a) Moltres’ Fire blast vs Articuno’s Blizzard
This is an interesting match since there’s lots of factors that can affect who wins, such as freeze, critical hits and misses. Can Moltres win simply by having more speed or is Blizzard’s affect a big factor?
Moltres wins 59423
Articuno wins (Freeze) 7566
Articuno wins (No freeze) 33011
Analysis
Moltres wins about 60% of the time
Articuno wins 40% of the time
About 19% of the wins Articuno gets is because of a freeze
Conclusion
Moltres is more likely to beat Articuno simply because is faster, and also having a higher critcal hit rate. For Articuno to win, one of three things must happen. Either Articuno gets a freeze, a critical hit or Moltres’ Fire blast misses.
Match 3b) Moltres’ Fire blast vs Articuno’s Ice beam
Here’s the rematch. Ice beam and Blizzard take the same amount of turns to hit the opponent and also since Articuno doesn’t get many moves and is often given Ice beam, this match is essential for Moltres vs Articuno.
Moltres wins 53799
Articuno wins (Freeze) 8366
Articuno wins (No freeze) 37835
Analysis
Moltres wins about 54% of the time
Articuno wins about 46% of the time
About 18% of the wins Articuno gets is because of a freeze
Conclusion
Using Ice beam instead of Blizzard gives Articuno an extra 6% chance of winning since Ice beam always hits. Even then, Moltres is still more likely to win, but it’s either one’s game.
Match 4) Jynx’s Blizzard vs Zapdos’ Drill peck
Oftentimes Jynx is beaten to a pulp because of it’s low defense and HP. With a type advantage though, can Jynx beat one of the tougher physical attackers?
Zapdos wins 34408
Jynx wins (Freeze) 7639
Jynx wins (No freeze) 53953
Analysis
Zapdos wins about 34% of the time
Jynx wins about 66% of the time
Conclusion
Surprisingly, Jynx’s defense doesn’t cost it often and frequently beats Zapdos. Zapdos’ Drill peck may seem to be overrated against just any low defense pokemon, and it’s advised to switch when battling Jynx.
Match 5) Electrode’s Thunderbolt vs Gyarados’ Hydro pump
This is mostly just for fun, stacking the odds on Gyarados. This does help though as it shows if Gyarados can even beat the easiest Electric. Surf isn’t strong enough though, so Hydro pump is used instead.
Electrode wins 94626
Gyarados wins 5374
Analysis
Electrode wins about 95% of the time
Gyarados wins about 5% of the time
Conclusion
If even Electrode can beat Gyarados 95% of the time, Gyarados has no chance at beating them. However, Gyarados does have a very high chance on simply surviving one Thunderbolt, so Gyarados can still deal damage on Electrics. Anyways, don’t use Gyarados on Electrics.
Match 6a) Raichu’s Surf vs Sandslash’s Earthqauke
Raichu hovers around the area of Standard, simply being an Electric with Surf. Let’s see how it fares against Sandslash.
Raichu wins 33607
Sandslash wins 66393
Analysis
Raichu wins about 34% of the time
Sandslash wins about 66% of the time
Conclusion
If Raichu can’t handle Grounds without help from other pokes, Raichu isn’t really helpful then. With only one third of a chance at beating Sandslash, It’s not very reliable. The bulk of that percentage is from critical hits, while the remaining is the rare times Raichu survives Earthquake.
Match 6b) Raichu’s Surf vs Rhydon’s Earthquake
Since Golem is the only poke Surf can beat 100% of the time, let’s try Rhydon instead. Maybe by beating the Ground/Rocks will give Raichu some popularity.
Raichu wins 94816
Rhydon wins 5184
Analysis
Raichu wins about 95% of the time
Rhydon wins about 5% of the time (survives from low damage Surf)
Conclusion
95% is much better. With that percentage, Raichu is very reliable at beating Rhydon, and thus makes Raichu handy in standard. Raichu will still have trouble with the pure grounds though.
And that’s a wrap. There’s 6 matches and two rematchs for you to help you fight slightly better and proving what a smart kid mixed with a boring night can create. If you’d like me to make a match of any two pokes, just ask here by replying. They don’t have to be single attacks either, like for example, a Chansey can use Thunder wave and then attack etc. Give me any sets you’d like to know.
Final note: Ninetales has 349 HP. Tentacruel’s Hydro pump is the strongest Water attack. The maximum damage it can do is 348.99. Teehee.
Match 1) Dugtrio’s Fissure vs Starmie’s Surf
