The 2007 Upset Of The Year, a very fun award which goes to the most shocking and unexpected event to happen in a tournament. Here are the candidates.
ragnaar reaching the SDCS of the 07 RBY League
Ah yes, this. Ragnaar was originally not in this tournament and was subbed in the first week of round 2. In addition to him entering being behind some of his divison rivals, he was 3-0d by Cygnus in his first matchup. However, ragnaar rebounded when he had a really unexpected win against Kirby in week 2 of round 2.
Still, ragnaars back was against the wall, as me, SamG and rekt were the front runners of the division. In round 3 week 1, ragnaar went up against Shippou. We all thought that they did not battle and I made the final week topic as if they didn't, and ragnaar was eliminated. However, they battled on the very last day and thought the other would post the result, which was ragnaar making a great comeback, trailing from 4-2 to win 1-0.
There was a light at the end of the tunnel, but ragnaar was still shrouded in the darkness. He still had to beat rekt to at least force a 2nd place showdown. Luckily for ragnaar, rekt would completely no show and ragnaar had battled all the way back to force a 2nd place showdown with SamG who was having the opposite of ragnaars luck.
In the 2nd place showdown, with luck on his side, ragnaar managed to defeat SamG and pull off a great feat, reaching the SDCS. He lost to me in 2 games, with the first game simply being insane and one of the more memorable ones I've had.
Necavi playing for the winners bracket of TOS6
Necavi was a battler who didn't really have much of a resume at all. He never really accomplished anything and was pretty much a no name in TOS6. That didn't stop Necavi from pulling off a great upset, as he became one battle away from playing in the finals and having to lose twice not to win it all.
In round one, Necavi beat Sir Spanky, then in round two, went on to beat Undergamed by DQ, TPs antics didn't help their cause much! In round three, Necavi beat PLDHs Glitch then went on to beat Chunx 3-0 in the WB semi finals. In the WB finals, it was me against Necavi. Necavi wasn't successful in completing what was truly a great run but gave me a run for my money and his feat is acknowledged to this day.
Cladenstine being part of Team USA of the IRBYT 2
Cladenstine had virtually no RBY experience when he signed up to play in the IRBYT 2. He at least had a great mentor in myself as I did my best to teach him the game as quickly as I could, and it certainly paid off as Clad's learning curve was great. Clad went 4/2 in round one, two of his wins being against Hall of Famers in Slayer and HcM. Clad also nearly managed to beat me in what was an incredibly close game, but in the end, Clad managed to make the team.
Though the tournament would go on to become one of the worst in TA's history, Clad's upset should not be forgotten, as he did more than hold his own against people with a lot more experience, he outplayed them.
Good luck to the nominees!
