Cloudy with a chance of Thunderstorms
HP: 383 Atk: 278 Def: 268 Speed: 298 Sp. Atk: 348 Sp. Def: 278
Standard Zapdos: Zapdos (M) @ Leftovers - Drill Peck - Thunder - Rest - Sleep Talk
~The best Zapdos to use, now that HP Legends is widely banned in most competitions. Thunder from 348 sp attack hurts anything not resistant badly (save Blissey, who gets Drill Pecked anyways). Drill Peck hits everything else. Can't do jack to Rhydon/Steelix/Golem, though.
Other Options:
Hidden Power [Water/Ice/Grass], Reflect, Light Screen, Whirlwind/Roar, Thunder Wave.
If it's allowed, HP Zapdos is a bitch. Only Snorlax/Blissey handle it best (though it depends on the HP as to what the additional counters are). Reflect and Light Screen help Zapdos' already decent staying power. Whirlwind/Roar can be used to great success, esp. with Spikes down. Thunder Wave is meh imo, I'd rather just run Thunder and do damage as I paralyze.
Opinion:
The best electric in the game imo. Hidden Power lets it (like all other electrics) beat the grounds that otherwise crap on it, and it has good double stab moves (and the stats to use them).
Counters:
Raikou walls Zap all day and beats it with Thunder. Rock/Grounds like Rhydon/Golem and Steelix wall it completely. Grounds with decent defenses tend to handle Zapdos well, as do other electrics (namely Ampharos in addition to Raikou).

How come switching from RBY to GSC, Thunder got popular? I know it's nice if anyone uses Rain dance, but that's rare in standard (cept for maybe Lanturn). No more Thunderbolts?

I think because Thunder has a better chance of paralyzing the opponent, and it's stronger coming from a 125 base sp.att. Thunderbolt can't OHKO suicune and friends, while thunder can.
One question, why is Hidden power banned these days?
